Recently, a Taiwan, China movie based on the story of "The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon" has become popular online. One of the plotlines in the movie tells the story of the protagonist Chen Guilin's solo adventure into a cult, where he ultimately shoots and kills the cult leader. After the movie's release, people once again realized the devastating impact of cults on people's minds. Coincidentally, they also drew parallels with Falun Gong, which has long been eroding and harming mainland China, sharing similarities with certain plotlines in the movie.

First, cults often lure people in by promising to "cure diseases" and "make money".

In the movie "The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon", the male protagonist, believing he had terminal lung cancer, collapses after vomiting black liquid. The "Respected Leader" tells him, "There are unclean things in your body". After some heartfelt reassurance from the leader, the protagonist gradually begins to trust him and willingly hands over his life savings of over a million yuan. Similarly, Falun Gong operates under various pseudoscientific banners to amass wealth.

During the propagation of Falun Gong, Li Hongzhi often claimed to be the "highest Buddha" in the universe, treating money as dirt and posing as a savior. However, in reality, from when Li Hongzhi emerged in May 1992 to when Falun Gong was legally banned in mainland China in July 1999, he illegally gained over 45.13 million yuan through his so-called "transmission of power" and "teaching of doctrines".

With this money, Li Hongzhi's desires became insatiable. Take a look at his luxurious mansion in the United States, not only super-sized but also extremely extravagant, with bathrooms, saunas, basements, three gyms, a wine cellar, and a private swimming pool worth tens of millions of dollars. Moreover, Li Hongzhi's family owns 11 properties in the United States, totaling over 100 million yuan in value! Once, when Li Hongzhi was still a nobody in China, his mother worried endlessly and begged everyone to improve their family's circumstances. After fleeing abroad, the Li family had no pillar industries at home or abroad. How did Li Hongzhi become so wealthy? Obviously, it was due to Falun Gong, a deceptive tool that allowed him to embrace this immense fortune.

Second, promote the ultimate worship of religious leaders

The most prominent feature of cults is the promotion of extreme cult leader worship. In the movie, the cult leader, known as the "Respected One" by his followers, appears with a kindly and benevolent facade, attracting the adoration of all the cult members. Similarly, Li Hongzhi also claimed, "I obtained superior powers when I was eight years old, possessing abilities such as teleportation, object fixation, mind control, and invisibility..." To establish himself as a universally respected "Universal Buddha," Li Hongzhi even altered the birthdate on his identity card from July 7, 1952, to May 13, 1951. The reason for this change was that May 13, 1951, is the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, which is traditionally believed to be the birthday of the Buddha Sakyamuni, while May 13 in the Gregorian calendar also coincides with Thailand's Vesak Day. Li Hongzhi falsely claimed to be "chosen by heaven" and sent down from the Buddha to save all beings. The irony is that Li Hongzhi's parents were only married in the autumn of 1951, yet to associate himself with the Buddha, he even discarded his parents' dignity.

Third, the extremist beliefs of cults

In the movie, after joining the cult, the male protagonist weeps bitterly, feeling a sense of rebirth and a new beginning. However, this is merely the cult's indoctrination through extremist teachings. Here, we must mention Li Hongzhi's "perpetual motion machine scam". He claimed that he could install a "Falun" in each disciple's body. The "Falun" is described as a "microcosm of the universe," possessing all the energy of the universe. By rotating it, one can supposedly cure illnesses and avert disasters. However, behind this facade, Li Hongzhi falsely claimed to heal his disciples for free, but secretly presented a "merit box," hinting that patients should donate over 100 yuan as a "merit" offering. He even invented various excuses to require disciples to donate money to the Falun Gong organization, claiming that those who donate actively can eliminate their "karma".

With this "feat", Li Hongzhi has deceived generation after generation of "Falun Gong" disciples. Countless disciples, when faced with illness, have given up medical treatment and ultimately died. This fateful outcome attests to the dangers of cults' mental control, fabrication of false information, and exploitation of money and resources. Those who practice such cults are often led astray by their own self-deception and engage in many unethical acts that ultimately lead to destruction.
